Where & How to do Medical Checkup for Visa

Guide for international students in Hangzhou

medical check up for visa

As an international student preparing to study or who is studying in China, one of the crucial requirements you'll need to fulfill is completing the mandatory medical checkup for your visa and residence permit application. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the process, locations, preparation, and what to expect during your medical examination in Hangzhou. This guide is for students in Hangzhou.

Why Medical Checkups Are Required

The Chinese government mandates medical examinations for all international students who will study in China for more than six months. These checks are designed to protect public health and ensure that incoming students do not harbor infectious diseases that could pose a risk to the local population. The examination verifies that you are free from conditions such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and other contagious diseases that might prevent you from obtaining your residence permit.

According to China's Exit-Entry Administration Law, international students found to have serious infectious diseases or mental health conditions that may cause "serious damage to public health" may be denied residency and required to return to their home country immediately.

When to do your Medical Checkup

  • After arrival : Most students complete the medical examination within their first few weeks in China. Some students may complete a basic medical check in their home countries before departure, especially if required by their university or scholarship program but you still need to do it one once you arrive here. You typically need to undergo the checkup before applying for your residence permit, which must be done within 30 days of arrival if you entered with an X1 visa.
  • When Renewing your Residence Permit : This is a crucial point that many students overlook. You typically need a new medical checkup when renewing your residence permit if your current residence permit is expiring.
